Winifred "Winnie" Rowles, a native of Manchester, England, moved to Canada in 1910. She graduated from Nutana Collegiate in Saskatoon and enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan in 1928.

In 1926-27, she competed in high jump at an intervarsity meet, the first time that women had entered as a team. In other meets she competedin discus and javelin.

Winnie was the jump centre on the University of Saskatchewan basketball team. A comment published in the Greystone yearbook beside her graduating picture states: "Winnie, who had been the pivot of the team for four years, will leave a vacancy hard to fill - a great centre, rarely fails to get the tipoff."

Winnie was vice-president of the Student Representative Council and a member of the University Athletic Directorate and Women's Athletic Council.
