Phyllis Haslam, a graduate of Havergal College in Toronto, enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan (B. Sc., 1934) in 1930.

During her four years on campus, she captured four individual championships, broke several intervarsity records and led the University of Saskatchewan to four consecutive championships. She trained in the 14-metre pool that used to be in the basement of Qu'Appelle Hall.

While a student at the University of Saskatchewan, she broke the Canadian record in both the 100-yard and 220-yard breaststroke.

At the 1934 British Empire Games trials in Hamilton, Phyllis broke the world record for the 100-yard breaststroke of 1:18.13. She also set a British Empire record in the 200 breaststroke at 2:53.00. She won a silver medal in the 200 at the Games and swam the breaststroke leg on the Canadian 3X100-yard medley relay team which won gold.

Phyllis was inducted in the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in 1974 and was made an Officer in the Order of Canada in 1978.
