Lionel Laberge enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan (B.A., 1939) in 1936.

Nicknamed "One Man Gang" he dominted in both football and wrestling from 1936 to 1940. He led the football team to two WCIAU championships in 1936 and 1937. He was captain of the team in 1940 and was twice named a conference all-star.

As a wrestler, Lionel captured four consecutive intervarsity titles in the light heavyweight division and led the Huskies to four intervarsity Assault-at-Aarms victories.

He received a Major Athletic Award in 1940.
