Led by setter Melanie Sanford from Bedford Road Collegiate and power hitter Dorothy Schwaiger, a transfer student from the University of British Columbia, the Huskiettes defeated the York Yeowomen of Toronto 3-1 (15-11, 15-9, 14-1, 15-8) at McMaster University in Hamilton for their first CIAU Championship.

The Huskiettes went 4-1 in the preliminary round at nationals, their only loss coming to the University of Laval.

Saskatchewan, with a 9-3 record in league play, knocked off the number one ranked British Columbia Thunderbirds in the Canada West final at Education Gym. With rookie Cindy Crow hitting bullet serves, the Huskiettes defeated the T-Birds 3-0 (15-10, 15-11, 15-8). Saskatchewan had lost to B.C. 3-1 in the preliminary round.

The 1978-79 Huskiettes have been inducted into both the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame and the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame.
