With a 24-21 victory over St. Mary's the Huskies became the first Saskatchewan team to win the Canadian University football championship.

The Huskies opened the scoring as quarterback David Earl engineered a 78-yard drive, culminating in a four-yard touchdown run by Rob Symchyck.

They made it 14-0 when Earl passed to Dan Farthing for a 13-yard touchdown.

St Mary's Huskies scored a touchdown in the second quarter and struck for another in the third quarter to tie the game 14-14.

Saskatchewan went ahead on an 11-yard field goal by Phil Guebert and a nine-yard touchdown fun by Earl.

Quarterback Chris Flynn, the Hec Crighton Trophy winner as the top player in CIS  football, hit Ian MacDonald with a 20-yard touchdown pass to pull St. Mary's within in three points.

With St. Mary's driving in the final minute of the game, Flynn was hit by Saskatchewan defensive end Don Bristow, fumbled and Saskatchewan's Rob Dutton recovered.

Earl passed for 244 yards and won the Ted Morris Memorial Trophy as most valuable player in the game.

Earlier, the Huskies beat the Bishop's Gaiters 41-13 to win the Churchill Cup national semifinal and advanced to the Vanier Cup final at SkyDome in Toronto for the second straight year.

The Huskies finished first in the Canada West in the Canada West conference at 6-2 and beat the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds 24-9 in the conference final at Griffiths Stadium.

Nine Huskies - offensive guard Rod Lessmeister, receiver Dan Farthing, kick return Errol Brown, linebacker Kim Pasloski, slotback Kelvin Sander, defensive end Scott Hundseth, defensive end Greg Mamer, safety Phil Guebert and defensive back Jason huel - were voted Canada West All-Stars. Brian Towriss was selected as Canada West Coach of the Year.

Pasloski, a finalist for the Presidents Trophy as the top defensive player in Canada, was named to the All-Canadian team.

The 1990 Huskies have been inducted in both the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame and Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame.
