Gord Garvie, a graudate of Nutana Collegiate in Saskatoon, enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan (B. Ed., 1969; B.A. P. E., 1970; M. Sc., 1970) in 1964.

During his five years with the Huskies wrestling team, he won four Western Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Association conference titles and three Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union national championships.

He represented Canada at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City and was also a member of the national team that toured extensively internationally.

Gord went on to become coach of the Canadian national wrestling team, highlighted by leading the team at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

In football, he played for the Huskies for four years and was selected to the Western all-star team three times - 1966, 1967 and 1969. He was the conference scoring champion in 1967 and was selected as the league's most valuable player.

For four consecutive years - 1967, 1968, 1969 and 1970 - Gord was awarded the E. Kent Phillips Trophy as male athlete of the year at the U of S.

Gord was inducted into both the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame and the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in 1986.

Gord later coached wrestling at Lakehead University and was head coach of the wrestling team and an assistant coach with the football team at the University of Saskatchewan.
