William Ebbels, a graduate of City Park Collegiate in Saskatoon, enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan (B.Comm, 1947) in 1940.
His university studies were interrupted in 1940 when he joined the navy for the Second World War. He returned to university in 1946. During his three years on campus, William competed in basketball, hockey and tennis.
In 1946, he was a member of five-man University of Saskatchewan tennis team that was the runner-up to McGill University of Montreal for the national championship. Following his varsity career, he went on to capture eight Saskatchewan singles titles and seven doubles titles.
William was an outstanding shooter on the basketball team for three years.
He played junior hockey with the Saskatoon Quakers in the early '40s and joined the Huskies in 1946-47, playing six games and scoring seven points.
He said one of his greatest thrills was representing Saskatchewan in the first Canada Summer Games in Halifax in 1967. He was the olders competitor in the Games at 49.
William was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in 1976.
