Since 1993, the Lois and Doug Mitchell U SPORTS Athletes of the Year Awards (formerly known as the Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG) and Howard Mackie Awards, then the Lieutenant Governor's Athletic Awards) have been presented annually to honour the top male and female athletes competing in U SPORTS. Each year, the 58 U SPORTS institutions select one male and female athlete of the year, from which one finalist of each gender is selected to represent each regional conference (Canada West, OUA, AUS, RSEQ). The eight nominees are then considered for the U SPORTS Athletes of the Year based on their athletic accomplishments, outstanding sportsmanship, and demonstrated leadership. A vote of the Canadian Athletic Foundation trustees determines the winners.
The University of Saskatchewan Huskies have seen two student-athletes named a U SPORTS Athlete of the Year since 1993.
