Trailing 14-9 in the fifth game, the Huskies reeled off seven straight points to defeat the Manitoba Bisons 16-14 and win the CIAU Championship at McMaster University in Hamilton.
Don Saxton, a 6-7 middle blocker from Plenty, who had played previously for two seasons with teh Huskies basketball team, came up big in the Canadian final with several stuff blocks. The Huskies took the match 3-2 (15-11, 14-16, 15-4, 12-15, 16-14). Tom Graham, who would go on to be coach of teh Huskies, was the big gun for the Manitoba Bisons. Saxton and setter Grant Gudmundson were both named to the championship all-star team.
Earlier, the Huskies beat the Victoria Vikings 3-1 (15-6, 12-15, 15-3, 15-13) in the Canada West conference final at Education Gym.
The 1978-79 Huskies have been inducted into both the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame and the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame.
