Born in Germany and raised in Edmonton, Val attended the University of Alberta and played five seasons with the Golden Bears football team at fullback, linebacker and punter. He was the MVP in the 1967 Vanier Cup won by Alberta.
Val joined the faculty in the University of Saskatchewan physical education department in 1973 and continued in the position for 28 years.
He was head coach of the Huskies football team from 1973-78 and 1980-83 and was an assistant coach for an additional nine years during which the Huskies were finalists in the Vanier Cup four times, winning in 1990 and 1996.
He was coach of the wrestling team for two years.
From 1980 to 1991, he was the Huskies Athletic Director and assistant dean for the College of Kinesiology.
As an administrator, he served as president and executive director of the Canada West and on the board of directors with the CIS.
He was active as a football builder in many capacities, including co-author of the Canadian Amateur Football coaching certification manual.
Val was inducted into the University of Alberta Hall of Fame in 1999 and in 2003 received the CIS Austin Matthews Award for contributions to university sport.
