Garnet McKee, a graduate of City Park Collegiate in Saskatoon, enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan (B.E., 1963) in 1957.

During his first two years of university, he played for the Saskatoon Hilltops and won Canadian Junior Football Championships in 1958 and 1959. He played on both sides of the ball with the Huskies and was later an assistant coach with the team for two years.

Garnet was a member of the Huskies hockey team for four years -1957 to 1961 - and was regarded as a hardworking, two-way player. In 20 games in conference play, he had nine goals and 17 points.
