Tom Chad, a graduate of St. Mary's High School in Prince Albert, enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan (B.S. P.E., 1979) in 1973.

He played defensive back and running back on the football team for five years. In 1977, Tom was a Canada West conference and CIAU all-star defensive back. He was selected to play in the inaugural Can-Am Bowl football game in Tampa, Florida, featuring Canadian and U.S. college all-stars.

Tom also competed on the track & field team for four seasons in sprints and relays. He set a Huskie team record for 300 yards and in 1975, was the Canadian junior champion in the 200 metres.

In 1977, he was awarded the Howard Nixon Trophy as the University's outstanding male athlete in a tournament sport. In 1978, he received the E. Kent Phillips Trophy as male athlete of the year.

Tom was an assistant coach on the Huskie football team from 1978 to 1983.
