Byron Tokarchuk, a graduate of Walter Murray Collegiate, enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan (B.A., 1988) in 1983.
Byron was on the Huskies basketball team for five years. He was named a Canada West conference all-star all five seasons and was selected to the CIAU All-Canadian team four times.
Byron, a 6-8 centre, was a member of the Fabe Five Unit - also featuring guards David Karwacki and John Cleland and forwards Greg Jockims and Kirk Jones - that twice led the Huskies to the national championship tournament finishing fourth in 1984-85 and fifth in 1987-88.
In 1985, Byron was the leading scorer and rebounder in the Canada West and at the completion of his career was teh Huskies all-time leader in points (3,572) and boards (1,739). Both records were broken by Andrew Spagrud in 2008.
He received the E. Kent Phillips Trophy as the Huskies male athlete of the year in 1988.
Byron was a member of Canada's national team for two seasons. He was offered a tryout with the NBA's San Antoion Spurs but his pro ambitions were cut short by a knee injury.
