John Konikowski, a graduate of Riverview High School in Moose Jaw, enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan (B. Ed., 1982) in 1971 from Brigham Young University where he was on an athletic scholarship for track & field,

John competed with the Huskies for three years in both football and track & field. He was an eight time Canada West conference champion in track & field, with first place finishes in 20-metre hurdles, 300-metres and the 4X400-metre relay. He also won gold at the Canadian senior indoor championships in long jump, 50-metre hurdles and relay.

In football, he was a Canada West conference all-star and Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union All-Canadian at wide receiver in 1973. He led the nation in receiving in 1973 with 46 catches for 796 yards.

John went on to play nine years in the CFL with the Edmonton Eskimoes and Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

He is an inductee into the Sasktaoon Sports Hall of Fame, the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and Museum and the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame. He married Diane Jones, also an inductee into the University of Saskatchewan Athletic Wall of Fame.
