E. Kent Phillips, a graduate of Nutana Collegiate in Saskatoon, enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan in 1921.
He played on the U of S hockey team for five years in the 1920s and returned to the team as coach in the 1930s. He started coaching in 1932-33, when the Huskies name was first introduced. He continued with the team in 1933-34 and from 1935-36 to 1937-38.
Kent was a member of the Huskies football team for four years and was captain of the team in 1925 and 1926 when it won the city championship.
In 1928, he joined the faculty of the College of Engineering and began an illustrious career as coach of the U of S football team. During his 13 years as head coach, the Huskies won the Hardy Cup intervarsity championship six out of a possible 10 years, including a run of four straight starting in 1934.
Kent is regarded as a founding father of modern football in Saskatchewan. Among his roles as an administrator was serving as commissioner of the Western Interprovincial Football Union, which later became the CFL.
He is an inductee into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.
The E. Kent Phillips Trophy is presented by Huskie Athletics to the male athlete of the year at the University of Saskatchewan.
