Tom Russell was born in Scotland in 1899 and immigrated to Canada as a young man. He took employment with the Department of Physical Education in 1949 and continued in the position for 23 years.

Tom was pool operator, storekeeper, caretaker, bookkeeper, booking agent and facility manager at teh University of Saskatchewan. Unofficially, he was a tyrant over all first year students, a friend to upper class students, a guardian of law and order, and an advisor to students, coaches, managers and facilty - and to administration.

He ws a mix of dour humour, canny Scot, and boundless energy who spent his career dedicated to the service of the University, its students and teams.
