Alfred Bence, born in Brandon, enrolled in the University of Saskatchewan in 1925.
As a member of the swim team, he competed in the breaststroke and on relays. During his career, the team captured a number of intervarsity meets and he finished first in the breaststroke in 1928 and 1929.
Alfred was awarded the coveted Silver Dolphin, presented by the University Swimming Club for passing secondary swimming and a life saving test.
As a tennis player, Alfred joined forces with Ellis McMillan and Vera Borland to dominate at the city, intervarsity, provincial and Western Canadian scene in singles and doubles competition.
Alfred lived most of his life in Saskatoon, where he did his schooling and practiced law until 1961, when he was appointed Chief Justice of the Queen's Bench Court and moved to Regina.
