SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men's hockey team will look to ride into the postseason on a high note, with the team playing host to the Regina Cougars on Friday night, before trekking south on Highway 11 for Saturday night's contest in the provincial capital to close the home and home.
Entering the final weekend of play, the Huskies sit in a tie for first place with the Alberta Golden Bears, with each club possessing 42 points on the season.
With each team already having locked up the first and second seed in the conference and a quarter-final bye, Saskatchewan and Alberta are battling for the right of home-ice advantage through the playoffs.
The Golden Bears have the tiebreaker thanks to their head-to-head record against the Huskies this season, meaning the Dogs will need some help from the Manitoba Bisons to finish atop the conference.
Meanwhile, Regina is amid some playoff jockeying of their own, as Saskatchewan's provincial rival enters the weekend desperately chasing their first playoff appearance since 2012-13.
The Cougars, who have only qualified for the postseason once in the last ten seasons, enter the weekend two points back of sixth-place UBC and three points back of fifth-place Manitoba.
However, the odds aren't exactly in favour of win-hungry Regina, who are 1-17 against the Saskatchewan in the last five seasons, including the Huskies sweep of their provincial rivals in their home-and-home series earlier this season.
The Huskies took care of business last weekend in Winnipeg, recording two come-from-behind victories over the host Bison to record the series sweep with
Logan McVeigh leading the way with three points including the overtime winner in Friday night's contest.
Meanwhile, Regina will come to the Bridge City looking to rebound from their weekend sweep against Alberta, after falling 6-3 and 6-1 on back-to-back nights.
5 Things
1: The Huskies will take the ice on Friday night, having not lost to the Cougars in Saskatoon in 2,269 days, with their last defeat coming back on Nov. 21, 2013, at Rutherford Arena.
2: Saskatchewan enters the weekend as the hottest team in the conference with only one regulation loss since Oct. 13. Since starting the season with an 0-1-3 record, the Huskies have gone on a 20-1-1 stretch over their past 22 contests.
3:
Levi Cable,
Logan McVeigh,
Kohl Bauml and
Andrew Johnson will play their final regular-season contest at Merlis Belsher Place on Friday night, as the quartet of forwards wrap up their fifth-and-final season of eligibility.
4: After a two-point outing in Saturday night's overtime win,
Jared Dmytriw, enters the weekend with 25 points in 26 games. The first-year forward is having the best statistical season by a Huskie rookie since the trio of Bauml, Cable and
Andrew Johnson stepped onto the campus for their first seasons in green and white back in 2015-16. Dmytriw would surpass Johnson's mark of 26 points with two points this weekend.
5: This marks the eighth-consecutive season that either the Alberta or Saskatchewan will finish atop the conference regular-season standings, with the 2011-12 Bisons being the last team other than either the Golden Bears or Huskies to accomplish the feat.
