SASKATOON, Sask. - The University of Saskatchewan Huskie Men's Hockey team and head coach
Brandin Cote announced today the signing of former WHL Captain Eric Johnston.
"We're really excited to add Eric to our group," said Cote. "He's a smart, poised defenceman who brings a ton of experience from his time in the WHL, where he served as a captain. He's going to be a reliable and steady presence on our blueline."
"It was a no-brainer when [the Huskies] reached out to me," said Johnston. "You look at how deep [into the playoffs] they've gone the past few years, how deep the team is, and it's close to home so I think it's all you can get. They also have a tight team so joining a group with good chemistry is huge too, I'm looking forward to it."
A 6-foot left shot defenceman from Regina, Johnston joins the Huskies following a four-year career in the WHL where he appeared in 239 career regular season games. Beginning his major junior career with the Edmonton Oil Kings in 2021-22, he played 19 games, recording four points, before being traded to the Prince Albert Raiders. He went on to spend two full seasons with the Raiders following the mid-season deal, recording 46 points and in 2023-24 was named team Captain.
During his time in Prince Albert, Johnston saw postseason action twice, totaling a goal and an assist in ten playoff contests.
Following the 2023-24 season Johnston was once again featured in a trade, this time being sent to the Swift Current Broncos where he appeared in 37 games and recorded 13 points. As the 2024-25 WHL trade deadline approached in January, he was dealt one final time in a trade with the Moose Jaw Warriors where he would take the ice for 10 contests.
