REGINA, Sask. - The Regina Cougars completed a home-and-home sweep of the Saskatchewan Huskies with a 79-58 victory on Tuesday night (Feb. 3) at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Following a Thursday night (Jan. 29) loss at home, the Huskies needed a win to keep their playoff hopes alive but a strong second half from their provincial rivals allowed the Cougars to move into the final playoff position in Canada West's Prairie Divison.
Saskatchewan used an early 10-0 run to go up 21-11 in the opening minute of the second quarter, but the Cougars replied with a big push before halftime. Regina outscored the Huskies by a 27-15 margin in the second quarter, helping the home team take a 38-34 lead into the break.
The Huskies briefly took a pair of leads in the third, but it was all Regina after that. The Cougars went on an 18-3 run - with the final seven points all scored by Sufyan Elkannan - which put Regina up 60-46 late in the period. Regina continued the push in the final quarter, outscoring Saskatchewan 19-10 in the fourth to cement the win on Senior Night.
Mohamed Mahadhi led the Huskies with 15 points in the loss, while
Easton Thimm, the nation's rebounding leader, recorded his thirteenth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Saskatchewan will return home this weekend (Feb. 6 & 7) and host the No. 4-ranked Winnipeg Wesmen to close out the 2025-26 season.
