Future, Current, and Former Huskies Poised to Shine at 2025 Canadian Track & Field Championships

OTTAWA, Ont. – Wednesday, July 30, 2025, marks the official start of the 2025 Canadian Track & Field Championships, presented by Bell, for over 1,500 athletes from across the country. Among those competing at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility are 26 with ties to the University of Saskatchewan (USask) Huskie Track & Field Team. 12 current student-athletes, four incoming recruits, and 10 alumni will compete in events ranging from hurdles to discus, aiming to take their place on the podium among the best in Canadian athletics.

"The Canadian Track and Field Championships is always an exciting competition for our Huskie athletes," said Huskie Track & Field Head Coach Jason Reindl. "Paige and Hannah are coming off a very successful FISU World Championship and we have a number of athletes in the U20 age group who are ranked 1st in the country (Hussey, Pinno, Woodhouse, and Mathieson) which goes to show just how bright the future is within our program. Seeing several of our alumni competing as well is always just awesome to watch as they continue to pursue excellence in the sport."

Future, current, and past Huskie athletes are featured in two categories at the Canadian Track & Field Championships, with 11 competing among U20 athletes and 15 in the Senior category.

Highlighting the U20 athletes are four current and incoming student-athletes in Michael Hussey (Saskatoon, SK), Nathan Pinno (Fort Saskatchewan, AB), Hailee Woodhouse (Dilke, SK), and Alyssa Mathieson (Sylvan Lake, AB) who each rank first in their respective events.
Hussey is in the midst of his first offseason following a tremendous rookie campaign last season. The middle-distance specialist turned heads just weeks into his freshman campaign, setting a U20 Canadian record at the Penn State Open in February before claiming Canada West bronze in both the 600m and as a member of the 4x400m relay team at the conference championships. He now heads to Ottawa with a season's best of 1:48.03 in the 800m, over two tenths better than the second-ranked athlete.

Nathan Pinno is another athlete coming off a strong introductory season into U SPORTS Track & Field. Specializing in throws, Pinno's rookie season was highlighted by a 3rd-place finish at the Pandas Open in Edmonton followed by a strong showing at the 2025 Canada West Championships which saw him just miss the shot-put podium with a 4th-place throw of 15.54m. This week, he enters competition as the top-ranked athlete in shot put and the only athlete to surpass the auto qualification standard of 17.00m, earning a season's best of 17.98m. Additionally, he ranks second in discus with a throw of 51.01m and is one of three athletes who earned auto qualification.

As for incoming recruits, Hailee Woodhouse and Alyssa Mathieson enter the Canadian Championships as top-ranked athletes in the 400m and high jump, respectively. Woodhouse, a sprints specialist, topped the rankings with a 400m time of 54.03 seconds, which she ran at the Saskatchewan Canada Games Trials & Provincial Championships in June. She will also compete in the 200m, owning a personal best of 24.30 seconds. Meanwhile, Mathieson currently sits atop the rankings with a season's best jump of 1.71m, achieved at the ASAA Track & Field Championships in Calgary just last month.

All four athletes will also be featured in the 2025 Canada Summer Games in August, with Michael Hussey, Nathan Pinno, and Hailee Woodhouse set to compete for Team Saskatchewan while Alyssa Mathieson will suit up for Team Alberta. In total, 33 Huskie student-athletes will represent their provinces in St. John's next month.

Four additional U20 athletes enter the week ranked in the top 10 in their respective events. Jocelyn Hanson ranks sixth while Logan Schmidt ranks tenth in the high jump, and Logan Kok sits sixth in 110m hurdles and seventh in the decathlon.

Turning attention to the senior category, The Canadian Championships will mark a quick turnaround for current Huskie student-athletes Paige Willems (Saskatoon, SK) and Hannah Hagerty (Regina, SK), who both recently represented Canada at the 2025 FISU Summer Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany.

Willems, who will compete in the 400m this week, returned from overseas with some international hardware after helping the Canadian 4x400m team claim bronze. A sprints specialist, Willems ran lead in the relay final, setting her team up for a podium finish with a time of 3:34.16. Her FISU success comes after another fantastic season in green & white in which she helped the Dogs claim a 7th consecutive Canada West Title and U SPORTS Bronze medal. Individually, she added five medals to her impressive career, three at the conference championships (Gold – 4x200m, 4x400m; Silver – 300m) and a pair of silver medals at nationals as part of the Huskie 4x200m and 4x400m relay teams.

For Hagerty, she enters the weekend as the No. 2-ranked athlete set to compete in the long jump thanks to a season's best jump of 6.28m achieved last week at the FISU Summer Games. Similarly to her Huskie teammate, Hagerty also added hardware to her green and white resume this past season. At the Canada West Championships, she earned a pair of gold medals in the long jump and as a member of the USask 4x200m relay team. She then closed out the 2024-25 campaign with a 4x200m silver medal and 6th-place finish at the U SPORTS National Championships.

Two additional athletes head into the week ranked in the respective events in Jennifer Weber and Tyrell Sawatzky, both of whom are Huskie Track & Field alumni. Weber currently sits 5th in shot put thanks to a season's best throw of 13.74m while Sawatzky enters as the No. 7-ranked athlete with best toss of 46.08m.

Additional alumni headed to Ottawa include Michael Akintunde (long jump | 3x CW All-Star, 2x U SPORTS All-Canadian), Daniel Yetman (triple jump), Gracie Fletcher (Anderson) (100m, 200m | 2x CW All-Star, 2x U SPORTS All-Canadian), Kaitlyn Harrison (400m, 800m, 1500m | 5x CW All-Star, 3x U SPORTS All-Canadian), Avery Pearson (800m | 16x CW All-Star, 11x U SPORTS All-Canadian), Jenica Swartz (800m, 1500m | 4x CW All-Star, 4x U SPORTS All-Canadian), Julianne Labach (800m | 6x CW All-Star, 4x U SPORTS All-Canadian), and Courtney Hufsmith (1500m | 6x CW All-Star, U SPORTS All-Canadian).

Rounding out the Huskie connections are current student-athletes Joshua Tam (pole vault), Geovanne Powell (100m, 200m), and Selene Keyowski (100m, 100m hurdles | 2x CW All-Star, U SPORTS All-Canadian) who will be entering their third- and fourth-years with the USask Track & field program.
