SASKATOON, Sask. - The University of Saskatchewan Huskie Men's Hockey team and head coach
Brandin Cote announced today the signing of former SJHL forward Zac Somers.
"We are excited to have Zac join us, he's is a proven leader who knows how to win with back-to-back SJHL titles under his belt," said Cote. "He's a true two-way player with a great character who will fit in anywhere in our lineup."
"It's super exciting [to be joining the Huskies], I know lots of guys who have made the jump there and they love it, it's a world-class organization," said Somers. "Everyone was super welcoming and there's obviously an awesome rink and facilities so it was hard to say no."
A 5-foot-11 forward from Melfort, Somers joins the reigning Canada West Champions after a four-year career in the SJHL with the Melfort Mustangs. A point-per-game player for three years, Somers appeared in 164 regular games, registering 62 goals and 147 points for the Mustangs. In 2022-23 he put together his most productive campaign, recording 52 points (26 goals, 26 assists) in 49 games while helping the Mustangs to a postseason appearance.
A proven winner and two-way player, Somers has also demonstrated his playoff prowess after playing in 34 postseason contests. After helping he Mustangs to an SJHL title in 2023-24, he returned for an explosive 17-point playoff run in 2024-25 to help secure back-to-back Championships. At the national level, Somers helped the Mustangs to two consecutive CJHL national finals.
Internationally, Somers also appeared for Team Canada in the 2022 World Junior A Challenge, where he recorded a goal in three contests.
