Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Elliot Gabler / Huskie Athletics

Maier’s Shutout, First Period Fireworks Lead Huskies to UPC Win Over Cougars

SASKATOON, Sask. — The University of Saskatchewan Huskies found the back of the net four times in the opening frame as Nolan Maier recorded two stops of a 19-save shutout to propel the Dogs to a lopsided 5-0 win over the Regina Cougars Saturday (Oct. 24) at Merlis Belsher Place. The win saw the Huskies secure a weekend sweep of the Cougars, picking up four points in both the Canada West standings and U-Prairie Challenge, presented by SaskMilk.

Saskatchewan got off to an impressively fast start to open the contest, needing 67 seconds to take the lead. After a Carter Stebbings shot was stopped, Regina goaltender Ross Hawryluk was unable to locate the puck before Liam Keeler who tucked it away.

Keeler's third of the season would go on to stand as the game-winner.

Just over four minutes later, Chase Bertholet sprung Jaydon Dureau on breakaway where the first-year Huskie made no mistake, beating Hawryluk blocker side to double the lead.

In the late stages of the period as the Saskatchewan attack continued to press, Keeler picked up his first assist of the game, finding Raphael Pelletier on the doorstep for his fourth in six games.

Keaton Sorensen then closed out the four-goal first period for the Dogs after a Saskatchewan shot leaked through Hawryluk in the crease.

The Huskies entered the first intermission with a commanding lead on both the score board and shot counter, earning a 19-2 advantage through 20 minutes.

The second period saw a more balanced game play out, with Regina outshooting the home team 11-10 thanks to a trio of power play opportunities. Despite the time on the man advantage, Nolan Maier kept the visitors off the scoreboard with another perfect frame.

Returning to the ice for the third period, tension continued to grow as the Huskies remained steadfast in limiting the Cougars and a parade of penalties followed. On the seventh penalty of the period, Saskatchewan added to the lead. Chase Bertholet capped off an impressive passing display, finishing it off with a one-timer to close out the scoring with his second of the campaign.

By the final whistle, Saskatchewan had out shot Regina 43 to 19, with Maier turning aside every shot he faced to record his second shutout of the 2026-27 season.

The Huskies will head on the road for their next weekend series against the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver while the Cougars enter the first bye week of their campaign.
