SASKATOON, Sask. —
Jaydon Dureau scored the game-winner just under two minutes into the second period while
Bryan Thomson stopped all 20 shots faced to lead the University of Saskatchewan Huskies to a 2-0 win over the Calgary Dinos Saturday evening (Oct. 10) at Merlis Belsher Place.
The win marked a clean sweep of the Dinos in the weekend series for Saskatchewan, who took a dramatic season-opener 4-3 the following night.
After a scoreless first period saw just nine shots on net and fewer quality scoring chances for either program, the two teams returned from the locker room each looking for the games crucial first score.
Just minutes into the frame, it was former ECHLer and freshman Huskie
Jaydon Dureau who broke the deadlock. The White City, Saskatchewan native received a drop pass from
Josh Pillar at the blueline before skating into the middle of the ice and beating Calgary goalie Carl Tetachuk with a wrister through the legs of Dino defender.
The goal marked the first point of his young Canada West and USask career.
As the Dinos pressed for the equalizer, the visitors out-shot the Huskies 11-6 in the frame but Saskatchewan goaltender
Bryan Thomson, making his first start of the season, held firm.
Thomson went on to record a perfect save percentage, stopping all 20 Calgary shots to open his campaign with the third shutout of his career in green & white.
The third period saw the intensity sharply increase as the Huskies pressed for the weekend sweep and the Dinos looked to avoid back-to-back losses to open 2026-27.
Just past the four-minute mark of the period, that increased energy resulted in the first infraction of the game as Kurtis Smythe of the Dinos was called for cross checking.
Eighty-two seconds later the puck was back in the Calgary net after
Chase Bertholet found
Liam Keeler on the doorstep for the captain's first of the season. The assist marked Bertholet's third point of the weekend following a multi-point showing in the season-opener Friday.
As the final whistle drew closer, the third Calgary penalty of the game increased the difficulty level of a comeback for the visitors.
Unable to pull Tetachuk for the extra attacker until the final minute, Saskatchewan would secure the win to maintain a perfect record through the opening weekend of the 2026-27 season.
The Huskies head on the road next week with a pair of games against the Manitoba Bisons in Winnipeg, while the Dinos will open the home portion of their campaign against the Regina Cougars.
