PREVIEW: 2025 U SPORTS Track & Field Championships

SASKATOON, Sask. - This weekend the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Windsor will play host to the best track & field athletes U SPORTS has to offer, as the Windsor Lancers host the 2025 National Track & Field Championships. For the University of Saskatchewan (USask) Huskies, the weekend offers the chance to carry their momentum for a strong showing at the Canada West Championships two weeks ago into this weekend as the team looks to return to the U SPORTS podium.

Following a strong showing at the 2025 Canada West Track & Field Championships two weeks ago, the Huskies now shift their focus to the national stage.

Coming off their 7th consecutive Canada West title, the USask women are looking to return to the U SPORTS podium in 2025 after missing out by a single point last year in Manitoba. Leading the way for the Huskies is Canada West Track Athlete of the Year Avery Pearson, who is coming off a sweep of each event she competed in at the conference Championships to take home four gold medals. The fourth-year kinesiology major will have the opportunity to do the same at nationals as she is once again set to compete in the 600m, 1000m, 4x400m, and 4x800m. Pearson currently ranks second in the nation in the 600m and 1000m while the Huskie 4x400m ranks third and the 4x800m team first.

The only other USask athlete who has registered for four events this weekend is three-time 2025 Canada West medalist (2 G, 1 S), Jenica Swartz. Swartz is set to compete in the 1000m, 1500m, 4x400m, and 4x800m, and ranks in the top three in both her individual events (3rd in 1000m, 2nd in 1500m).

Canada West gold medalist Hannah Hagerty will also be looking for a medal performance in Windsor. Currently ranked second in the long jump, the only athlete ahead of her in the national rankings in Calgary's Sienna MacDonald, who Hagerty beat to claim gold two weeks ago.

On the men's side, fifth-year heptathlete and Canada West gold medalist (pole vault) , Jake Neufeld, leads the charge. Neufeld, who ranks second in the national heptathlon rankings, is coming into the weekend fresh after only competing in individual events at the conference championships two weeks ago. Huskie teammate Logan Kok will also be looking to challenge in the combined event, with Kok currently ranked 10th in the event nationally.

Competing in his first U SPORTS Championships, freshman Michael Hussey is set to compete both in the men's 600m and the 4x800m. The local Saskatoon product not only has a chance to challenge for a medal, but also a U SPORTS major award following his incredible rookie campaign.

Action from Windsor gets underway Thursday at 2:30 PM (1:30 local time) with the women's weight throw.
