Gabruchs lead the way as Huskies down Wesmen

WINNIPEG — Make it a perfect six points for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's soccer team after they defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 4-0 to open their season with a record of 2-0.

Maya Gabruch scored two goals and the Saskatchewan Huskies tallied three times in the final half hour to hand the Wesmen a 4-0 loss in a Canada West women's soccer match Saturday at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.

M. Gabruch, who scored in a win over Manitoba on Friday night, opened the scoring in the 42nd minute when her drive hit a body in front of the Winnipeg goal and ricocheted past Wesmen keeper Taryn Raabe.

Taisa Gabruch added to the Saskatchewan (2-0-0) lead in the 64th minute when she sent a strike from 30 yards out over the head of Raabe that made it 2-0. M. Gabruch, named the Huskies' player of the game, made it 3-0 in the 74th minute when she was sprung free inside the 18 for a one-on-one with Raabe that she slid inside the left post.

Kalli Cowles finished the scoring when she put her head on a corner kick in the 81st minute.

The Huskies, who had to wait until October last season for their first win, have jumped out with six points on the opening weekend and are feeling good with UNBC and Calgary coming into Saskatoon next weekend.

"Every game is important from a growth perspective," Huskies head coach Jerson Barandica-Hamilton said. "Obviously we want three points, but just getting kids in and them getting the experience of knowing what it takes to play at this level and compete I think is huge. Last year it took us a while to get our first win, so we're just ecstatic to be coming into Winnipeg, which is tough to do, to get six points is awesome."

Jadyn Steinhauer recorded the clean sheet and her second victory of the season stopping three shots.

Next up for the Huskies is their home-opener next weekend against the Timberwolves and Dinos on Sept. 14 and 15 respectively.
