SASKATOON – Matt Alfaro's double-overtime goal was the difference for the University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team, as they took down the Saskatchewan Huskies by a score of 3-2 at Merlis Belsher Place on Saturday, Oct. 26.
Alfaro's breakaway snipe just 46 seconds into the second overtime frame helped the visitors prevail with two-points and a series split in the process. The third-year forward, who also found the back of the net in the first period, now has eight goals on the season, which is a new career-high for the Calgary native. Chris Rauckman recorded his second goal of the season with Jordan Xavier tacking on an assist on the marker.
For the Huskies,
Layne Young scored for the third time in as many games as his third-period goal tied the game at two goals apiece.
Carter Folk's sixth goal of the season opened the scoring in the first period, as Folk extended his four-game goal streak, with five tallies in the stretch.
Donovan Neuls picked up a helper on both markers, while
Andrew Johnson and
Levi Cable also added an assist each on the night.
Matthew Greenfield turned aside 31 of 33 shots in the win for Calgary, while
Taran Kozun made 30 saves for Saskatchewan.
The Dinos got back in the win column following their two-game losing skid, moving to 6-1-1, staying just one-point back of the conference-leading Alberta Golden Bears.
For the Huskies, they have now registered at least a point in five-consecutive contests, dating back to the team's overtime loss against the Golden Bears on Oct. 12 and now sit with a 3-3-2 record through eight games this season.
Folk opened the scoring for Saskatchewan midway through the first period to give the homeisde the early lead, but Alfaro tied the game with under two minutes to play in the opening frame.
Calgary took the lead in the second period, as Xavier's beautiful feed across to Rauckman left the former Flin Flon Bomber with an open cage, and he made no mistake to score his second of the season, helping the visitors take a one-goal lead into the second intermission.
However, the Huskies tied the game just over minutes into the third period, after Neuls shot rebounded off of Greenfield, Young was there to bury the loose puck and tie the game at 2-2, which stood as the score through 60 minutes of play.
But after the first overtime failed to solve anything, the Dinos wasted little time in three-on-three, as a Huskies turnover in the offensive zone sprung Alfaro, who made no mistake to send the visitors back home with a series split.
After playing six of their opening eight games of the season at home, the Dogs will make the annual trip out to the coast to take on the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver. Meanwhile, Calgary will take on Alberta in a home-and-home, which begins on Friday night within the friendly confines of Father David Bauer Arena, before trekking north on Saturday in the second night of the back-to-back.
