SASKATOON – It's set to be the biggest weekend of the season for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's soccer team, as they continue their chase towards finishing atop the Prairie Division.
Â
Saskatchewan returns to Field 7 in Nutrien Park following their home-and-home last weekend, where they picked up back-to-back clean sheet victories over their provincial rival Regina Cougars. The Huskies will play host to the MacEwan Griffins and Alberta Golden Bears in a pair of crucial matches in the conference playoff picture.
Â
With the highest remaining seed in the Prairie Division after quarter-final action having the opportunity to play host to the Canada West Final Four, there is plenty at stake this weekend for the Huskies. Saskatchewan currently sits in second in the division with 24 points, trailing MacEwan by three points, while Alberta sits in third with 20 points.
Â
Finishing in the top-two of the Prairie Division would ensure the Huskies could dodge the dreaded Play-In game, while also granting the club the opportunity to play host to a quarterfinal match on home turf. Saskatchewan last hosted a home playoff game back in 2017, when they fell 3-0 to the UBC Thunderbirds.
Â
The Huskies, who enter the weekend as winners of three consecutive matches, will take their 7-2-3 record into battle against the Griffins and Pandas. MacEwan picked up a win and a draw against Alberta this past weekend, then recorded a 7-1 victory over Mount Royal Cougars on Tuesday afternoon to improve their record to 8-1-3, while the Pandas now sit at 5-2-5 entering the weekend.
10 Things
Â
1:
Jackson Wiegers,
Jenelle Zapski and
Hannah Gannitsos-Clark will be honoured prior to Sunday's match as the program says farewell to the trio of fifth-year athletes in their final regular-season game on home turf in their Huskies career.
Â
2: With two wins this weekend, Saskatchewan would finish the season with 30 points, which would stand as the program's most points since 2015, when the club finished the season atop the East Division table with 31 points.
Â
3: With seven goals this season, good enough for third-most in the conference, fourth-year forward
Maya Gabruch is now tied for ninth in single-season goals in program history, a mark fellow Huskie
Jenelle Zapski achieved back in 2013. Gabruch's three game-winning goals this season are tied for third in program history and the Saskatoon native is only one game-winner away from tying the Huskie record set by Elizabeth Hudon in 2010 and Zapski in 2013.
Â
4: Saturday's clash against MacEwan will feature two of the three leaders in save percentage in the Canada West. Griffins goalkeeper Emily Burns' .889 save percentage is atop the conference, while Huskies goalkeeper
Jadyn Steinhauer is in third with a .867 save percentage. Steinhauer's .867 clip would slot in at second in program history if the season were to end today.
Â
5: Steinhauer's seven wins this season is tied for first in program history with Marissa Wilford, who achieved the mark back in 2011. The goalkeeper is the lone Huskie to play in all 1080 minutes for the team this season.
Â
6: Saskatchewan has never lost to MacEwan on home turf in Canada West regular-season action, with victories coming in 2014 and 2015.
Â
7: MacEwan is tied for first in the conference with Calgary in goals against, as both programs have only allowed five in 12 games this season.
Â
8: The Huskies have picked up at least a point in their last six matches, with their last loss coming back on Sept. 21 in Vancouver against the UBC Thunderbirds.
Â
9: Saskatchewan is undefeated on home turf against Prairie Division opponents this season.
Â
10: The Huskies will be looking to end a three-game winless streak against the Pandas, with the club's last win against Alberta taking place back on Oct. 18, 2015.
