UPC Returns to the Court in Saskatchewan
For the final time this season the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, and the University of Regina Cougars will go head-to-head in a U-Prairie Challenge matchup.
This weekend features a home-and-home series with the provincial rivals squaring off in Regina on Friday before the Dogs return to their home court Saturday.
For the USask women's team, the two games feature a matchup of two of the top teams in Canada West with the Huskies at the top of the Prairie Division with a 14-2 record while the Cougars sit 4th with at 12-4. In the past two seasons the Cougars have been one of the few teams to best the Huskies in the regular season, with Regina having swept a 17-win USask team in 2022-23 season before handing them their only loss of the campaign last season. With the conference postseason returning to a multi-site format this weekend's game will be crucial to the Dogs hopes of securing home-court advantage throughout the postseason.
Meanwhile for the 3-13 Huskie men's team, they will need a pair of wins this weekend to stay in the race for the final spot in the 2024-25 postseason which is currently held by the Cougars (6-10). Just four games remain in the regular season and the Dogs will take on the 4-11 Brandon Bobcats following this weekend's series with Regina. If they can win out, the Huskies have a strong chance to capture the 7th seed in the Prairie Division with Brandon taking on Winnipeg (13-3) this weekend and Regina facing off against Calgary (13-3) in their regular season finale.
Players to Watch:
Gage Grassick & Jade Belmore - This weekend's doubleheader features two of the best players in the conference in Huskie guard
Gage Grassick and Cougar forward Jade Belmore. The pair each rank among the best players in the conference in several key statistical categories including points per game (1st & 2nd), assists per game (1st & 5th), steals per game (1st & 3rd), and three-point shooting (2nd & 3rd).
Freddy Kapinga - The freshmen enters rivalry weekend coming off his best two-game stretch of the season in Edmonton this past weekend. The rookie guard totaled 29 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals in back-to-back wins over the MacEwan Griffins.

Heavyweight Road Matchup for Huskie Men's Hockey
This weekend the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre will play host to a U SPORTS Top 4 matchup as the No. 2-ranked team in the Nation in the Saskatchewan Huskies take on the No. 4-ranked UBC Thunderbirds on the road.
The Huskies, who are coming off a weekend sweep of the MacEwan Griffins to extend their win streak to 11 games, will head west looking to continue their push for the No. 1-seed in both the Canada West East Division as well as the composite conference standings. The Huskies are currently tied with the Alberta Golden Bears for both but have two games in hand with just a pair of weekends remaining in the regular season.
The Dogs will be looking to continue a trend of road victories in their recent history with the Thunderbirds, with the home team having failed to earn a victory in each of the past six meetings dating back to the 2022-23 season. Despite the recent trends, wins have been hard to come by, with four of those six meetings being decided by one goal
On paper, Saskatchewan holds the advantage in nearly every major statistical category including goals for and against, as well as both powerplay and penalty killing percentage.
Players to Watch:
Chantz Petruic - The Huskies leading goal scorer is currently tied for second in conference scoring with 16 in the season and is third in points with 34. Petruic is also currently on a 10-game point streak which starting back in November this season.
Roddy Ross - Ross hasn't allowed more than two goals in a game since November 22 of last year, a streak that includes one shutout and two one-goal games, all the while owning a save percentage of .940 over that stretch.
