WINNIPEG - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's basketball team bounced back from Friday's loss to beat the Winnipeg Wesmen 69-53 Saturday night. Both teams move to an 11-1 record as a result of the weekend series split.
Bolton, ON-native Andrea Dodig scored a career-high 16 points while recording 6 rebounds in the full 40 minutes of gameplay. Summer Masikewich had a well-rounded stat line with 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 steals. Katriana Philipenko (13) and Libby Epoch (10) also reached double-figures in points.
The Wesmen were led by Faith Hezekiah and her 21 points on 9-for-17 shooting.
The Huskies locked in defensively from the opening tip, holding the Wesmen to 8 points in the first frame. The Huskies turned 26 Wesmen turnovers into 30 points. Additionally, the Saskatchewan held Winnipeg to their lowest point total this season.
After struggling to score in the paint Friday night, the Huskies found success Saturday, scoring 32 of their points at the rim. The Dogs were rewarded with their assertive attacking by drawing fouls, which resulted in shooting 80% (12/15) from the free throw line to secure the victory.
The Huskies head back to Winnipeg next weekend to take on the Manitoba Bisons (2-10).
