Undefeated Huskies stay hot, sweep Bisons

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies recorded their third-straight win, defeating the visiting Manitoba Bisons 4-1 on Saturday night at Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon.

With the win, Saskatchewan extended their lead atop of the east division standings, improving their record to 3-0-1. Meanwhile, Manitoba falls to 1-3 and in third in the division.

The Huskies received goals from four different players on the evening, with Taniel Gay, McKenna Olson, Naleya Kobussen and Payton Izask recording goals, marking seven different players finding twine thus far this season.

Jessica Tsai scored the lone goal of the match for Manitoba.

It was in the fourth minute when the Huskies got the ball rolling, as Gay used her speed to work her way onto a ball, making no mistake for her fourth in four games this season.

The Huskies kept coming for more just ten minutes later, as McKenna Olson got in alone on goal - making no mistake to put her side up two with her second goal of her Canada West career.

"I thought our first half was very dominant. We scored two goals and in the last 20 minutes of the first half I really liked how our team was possessing the ball and being connected," said Huskies head coach Jerson Barandica-Hamilton.

But in the second half, Manitoba made things interesting. In the 60th minute, Tsai took a free kick from just outside the box and she delivered a beauty. The Winnipeg native found the top-left corner of the net, placing it past a leaping Jadyn Steinhauer to trim the Saskatchewan lead to one.

"It was a fantastic goal and it definitely gave us life again. It brought the momentum back to us," said Bisons head coach Vanessa Martinez Lagunas.

But unfortunately for the visitors, that was as close as they could get.

Saskatchewan sealed it in the 83rd minute, as Kieran McKercher made a beautiful run down the left side of the pitch, before delivering a slicing cross, right to the foot of Kobussen who scored the first U SPORTS goal of her young career.

"I thought the subs in our second half of back to back games were outstanding, Naleya and Kieran, two first years coming in and just bringing energy which was exactly what we needed," said Barandica-Hamilton.

And for good measure, Payton Izsak put the icing on the cake in the 86th minute, as she added to the Huskies lead late in the match with her first of the season.

From there, the homeside ran out the reminder of the affair, sealing a six-point weekend.

"We had many close opportunities and we just didn't put them. They had four big chances. They put them in. Right. That's the difference in the game," said Martinez Lagunas.

Saskatchewan is back in action next weekend in a home-and-home with the Regina Cougars, which begins Friday night at Griffiths Stadium in Nutrien Park, with Barandica-Hamilton pleased with his teams play through four matches this season.

"Averaging three to four goals a game is really good, but I'm proud of how we've defended as a unit too," said Barandica-Hamilton. "I like where we're at and it's exciting times."

Meanwhile, Manitoba is set to take part in a home-and-home of their own, as they take on their cross-town rival Winnipeg Wesmen, beginning on Thursday, with the two clubs neck-and-neck in the chase for the second playoff spot in the east division.

"They are very important matches for us," said Martinez Lagunas. "We're going to go back home and get ready for Winnipeg and be better."
