The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's soccer team are undefeated no longer, as they lost 2-0 to the visiting Regina Cougars at Griffiths Stadium in Nutrien Park.
Regina received goals from Peyton Enns and Kyra Virbert, while first-year goalkeeper Allyson Ford recorded her third career shutout in her fifth career game for the away side.
The three points were pivotal ones for the Cougars, as with the win they moved into a tie with the Huskies for first in the east division. Meanwhile, this is one Saskatchewan will want to have back as they let an opportunity to move six points clear of their three divisional opponents slip through their grasp.Â
Enns' goal in the eighth minute handed the Huskies their first deficit of the season, and ultimately provided the Cougars with all they needed in the match as it went on to stand as the game winner.
After scoring four goals in the club's non-conference schedule, Enns continued to build her red-hot start to the Canada West season. The first-year forward has four goals through five matches with the Cougars and has been relied upon heavily by Cougars co-interim coaches Astrid Becker and Rob McCaffrey.
"Peyton came in with the expectation to score goals. She came in to be the expectation to be our goal scorer and she has come in to every training session, proving that she is a player that can score goals," said Becker.Â
"She has purpose behind all of her training and she executes what she does in her training environment, in the games and that's all we can ask for from a first year player is seeing that success."
Saskatchewan's hopes of responding in the second half by Virbert, as her tally in the 46th minute gave the visitors the all-important insurance marker.
Huskies head coach Jerson Barandica Hamilton wasn't particularly pleased with his club's effort on the night.
"I was really disappointed with the energy that we had tonight. I thought as a team we struggled with our compete level and when you play teams at this level, you have to always bring energy and compete," said Barandica-Hamilton.Â
"It was a great lesson tonight for us to learn to start games a bit with more energy and for longer periods of time."
On the opposite side, Regina isn't getting too far ahead of themselves, despite now standing all square with their provincial rivals.
"I think we need to keep this win in perspective because we also have a big game against them on Sunday. We respect them as an opponent and this is just one step in looking forward to who we are as a team and what we can accomplish together as a team," said Becker.
As Becker alluded to, the provincial rivals will do battle once again on Sunday afternoon in Regina, with a spot for top grabs in the division on the line.
