Huskies Cruise to Big Victory over Wesmen

Huskies Women’s Soccer Team score 5 in winning effort

Box Score Saskatoon, Sask (Oct. 1, 2021) – The Huskies scored three goals within four minutes of each other as they defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen by a score of 5-0 on Friday night. First-year forward Naleya Kobussen ended the night with a brace in the winning effort.

The Huskies opened the scoring early in the 9th minute when Naleya Kobussen scored off the Payton Izsak assist. Just two minutes later, Taneil Gay found Maya Gabruch, who doubled the Huskies lead. In the 12th minute, Payton Izsak scored the Huskies third goal in four minutes.

Kobussen scored her second goal of the game and third goal of her Canada West career in the 26th minute. The Saskatoon-native rounded Winnipeg goalkeeper Taryn Raabe after receiving a through ball from Maya Gabruch.

The Wesmen shored up their defence from this point forward, allowing only one more Huskie goal in the 71st minute. The goal marked first-year Georgina Gannitsos-Clark first goal in her Canada West career.

The Huskies came out firing after going 1-0-1 last weekend against the University of Regina Cougars. Tonight's game marked the Huskies first game back at Griffiths Stadium in Nutrien Park after losing their first game of the season last Friday at the hands of the Cougars.

"I thought our first half was exactly how we wanted to start off the game and play", said Huskies head coach Jerson Barandica-Hamilton. "Last weekend we didn't really have a good game at home and the girls were extremely motivated to correct that. This team is just starting to hit our stride and it it's just so exciting when we have players coming in and scoring goals, everyone contributing."

Winnipeg keeper Taryn Raabe was able to stop 9 of the Huskies 14 shots, including some acrobatic saves near the end of the first. Raabe also denied Kobussen a hat-trick late in the first-half after stopping a Kobussen penalty attempt.

Despite the loss, the young Wesmen team can point to a more rigid defence in the last 75% of the game. The Wesmen were able to hold the Huskies after head coach Amy Anderson's encouragement at the half.

The Huskies and Wesmen meet again tomorrow night at 7 PM at Griffiths Stadium in Nutrien Park. Saturday's game will be a "Play For A Cure" game with the Huskies wearing special pink jerseys. The jerseys will be auctioned off after the game with proceeds going towards the Canadian Cancer Society. Tickets for the game are now available at https://usask.universitytickets.com/.
