EDMONTON – Canada West's top women's basketball players were acknowledged Thursday, as the conference's all-star and all-rookies teams were unveiled.
After finishing 18-2 during the regular season, a pair of Saskatchewan Huskies standouts earned conference honours.
For the first time in her career with the Huskies,
Summer Masikewich was recognized as a Canada West First Team All-Star. The native of Calgary earned a Second Team All-Star nod in the past two seasons, but set new career highs with 17.4 points-per-game and 9.1 rebounds-per-game, helping her earn First Team status for the first time in her career.
In her final season in the green and white,
Sabine Dukate added to her already lengthy resume, as she was recognized as a Canada West All-Star for the fourth-consecutive season. The Ventspils, Latvia, native earned a Second Team All-Star nod after averaging 14.3 points-per-game, shooting 39.3 per cent from three-point range.
The pair of honours marks the sixth-consecutive season the Huskies have had at least two players make a conference all-star or all-rookie team.
Masikewich and Dukate will be in action tonight at the PAC, as the Huskies begin their playoff schedule with a quarter-final matchup against the Victoria Vikes in Saskatoon. 13 teams landed at least one player on one of the four teams (three all-star and one all-rookie), with seven teams having multiple players honoured.
Canada West's women's basketball award winners will be unveiled Thursday, February 27 at 10 a.m. MST.
More than a dozen all-stars and all-rookies will be in action this weekend when the conference quarter-finals and semifinals take place in Calgary and Saskatoon, as the Calgary Dinos and Saskatchewan Huskies get set for hosting duties.
