SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's soccer team had their highest-scoring game since October of 2017 in a dominant 6-1 victory over the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday afternoon.
Payton Izsak and
Jenelle Zapski both scored twice with
Taneil Gay and
Hannah Gannitsos-Clark recording the other goals for the home team. Izsak and Zapski both also added an assist in the contest, marking the first three-point game of Izsak's Huskie career.
Shae-Lynn Dodds scored the lone Wesmen goal, while Taryn Raabe was outstanding in defeat with the first-year goalkeeper making 12 saves in the contest.
The tone of the game was set right from the beginning.
Just five minutes into the contest, the Huskies had already compiled eight attempts toward the Wesmen net with Raabe being forced into multiple saves to keep her squad in it.
That pressure paid off in the 14th minute. A corner kick sent in by
Hannah Zdunich-Costa was knocked down by
Maya Gabruch and Izak pounced on it for her first of the game.
The Huskie dominance continued throughout the first half with Gay scoring in the 24th and Izsak adding another in the 34th minute of action to send the teams into the halftime break with Saskatchewan leading 3-0.
Any doubt as to the outcome of the game was removed early in the second half.
Gannitsos-Clark and Zapski both scored just three minutes into the second to increase the lead to five and put the game away.
Dodds scored her fifth of the season to break the shutout bid of
Jadyn Steinhauer but Sakatchewan was able to ride out the remainder of the game thanks to another goal from Zapski.
The win snaps a mini three-game skid for the Huskies and moves them to a record of 4-2-1 on the season. Winnipeg meanwhile falls to 1-6 in 2019.
Both of these teams are back in action tomorrow, Winnipeg will travel to Regina to take on the Cougars while the Huskies remain at home to face the Manitoba Bisons.
