No. 1 Huskies top WolfPack in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS, BC - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies led by four points after the first quarter and extended their lead in each quarter en route to their seventh straight Canada West women's basketball victory.

The number one ranked team in U SPORTS downed the youthful Thompson Rivers University WolfPack 90-58 at the Tournament Capital Centre on Friday night (Nov 29).

Saskatchewan got a strong game from Summer Masikewich. She had 28 points and 12 rebounds (six at either end). Two other Huskies were in double figures in this game.  Kyla Shand had 12 points while team captain Megan Ahlstrom added 10.

Thompson Rivers top scorer was Leilani Carney (5th year, guard, Burnaby, BC) with 11 points. Jordon Haggerty had 10 points.

The WolfPack knew they were massive underdogs against the number one ranked team in the nation but they held tough. They kept the score close in the first period and took a brief 12-11 lead. They trailed Saskatchewan by four (18-14) at the end of that first 10 minute stanza.   Masikewich had eight points for the Huskies while TRU was led by Saskatoon native Haggerty with five.

The second quarter saw the Huskies open a 14 point advantage led by Ahlstrom's seven points and Libby Epoch's three. Masikewich led the Huskies at the half with 11 points.  Thompson Rivers had five points from Emma Piggin to give her a team-leading nine at the break as both teams turned over the ball five times in that period.

The third quarter started with the WolfPack trying to close the gap thanks to a pair of baskets from Megan Rouault (3rd year, guard, Vernon, BC) which cut the deficit to 13.  Later, rookie Jordan Robb (forward, Kelowna, BC) potted a pair of three points to make it a 10 point ball game (46-36). The huskies put on a clinic against TRU and led by 22 (70-48) at the end of the period thanks to 13 points from Masikewich.

The Huskies continued to 'keep their foot on the gas" as they rolled to the 32-point victory.

These two teams will do battle again tomorrow (Sat Nov 30) at the Tournament Capital Centre. They will play the early game at 7 PM.
