KAMLOOPS, BC—Basketball fans in Kamloops learned first hand why the University of Saskatchewan Huskies are the defending Canada West champions and ranked number one in the nation this year. The Huskies dominated the youthful Thompson Rivers University WolfPack for a second straight night on Saturday (Nov 30) this time by a score of 90-38.
Saskatchewan enters the Canada West pre-Christmas break unbeaten in eight starts.
Summer Masikewich was the top scorer for Saskatchewan for the second straight night. She had 24 points along with nine rebounds (five on offence). Rookie
Andrea Dodig had 15 points while
Sabine Dukate contributed 11.
Thompson Rivers biggest offensive threat was Leilani Carney. The fifth year guard from Burnaby, BC had 16 points.
The Huskies quickly got off to a four point lead and extended it leading 29-10 by the end of the first quarter powered by 10 points from Masikewich. Thompson Rivers turned the ball over eight times in that first period compared to only one for Saskatchewan. The Huskies outrebounded TRU 10-5 in the first quarter. Brooklyn Golt led TRU offensively with five points.
Saskatchewan continued its dominance in the second quarter as they collected five straight steals en route to a 46-15 advantage at the break. They had 22 points in the first half off turnovers. Masikewich had four points in the second period along with Dodig. Carney had five points for TRU in the second quarter.
The third quarter saw the teams go to their respective benches to get their younger players experience. The Huskies extended their lead to 38 points leading 65-27.
In the contest, Saskatchewan had 32 points off turnovers, 18 second chance points, 27 fast break points and their bench had 32 points. Thompson Rivers had 10 points off turnovers, five second chance points, and 10 bench points.
