SASKATOON – Make it a 6-0 start to the season for the No. 1 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's basketball team after they held the visiting Regina Cougars to a season-low points total in a 74-45 victory inside the PAC Saturday night.
A stifling defence was key to victory for Saskatchewan as they held Regina to just 15 points in the first half, forcing 27 turnovers on the night. The defensive effort marked the fifth time in six Canada West games that they have held opponents to less than 50 points.
Sabine Dukate once again led the way offensively, scoring 24 points and finishing the night with the Huskies a +20 while she was on the floor.
Summer Masikewich added 13 points and seven rebounds while seven other Huskies scored on the night.
Regina meanwhile was led by Faith Reid who scored 16 points on the night.
After a tight first quarter the Huskies blew the game wide open in the second. Led by 10 points from Dukate, Saskatchewan outscored Regina 20-8 to take a 30-15 lead at the break.
The Cougars played their best offensive basketball of the night in the third, putting in eight points in a row to bring the score to 44-32 before the Huskies responded and ran pulled away late for the eventual 29-point victory.
Sitting at 6-0 on the season, Saskatchewan is currently top in the conference while Regina falls to 3-5 with the loss.
Both of these teams will be back in action next weekend. Regina will return home to face the Alberta Pandas while the Huskies will hit the road to take on the Thompson Rivers WolfPack.
All of that action can be watched online at Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
