SASKATOON – In their final home game of the 2019 calendar year, the University of Saskatchewan men's hockey team defeated their provincial rival Regina Cougars by a score of 2-0 on Saturday, Nov. 23 at Merlis Belsher Place.
Jared Dmytriw was the story of the evening for Saskatchewan. The freshmen forward scored both goals for the Huskies, extending his point streak to six games, which is the longest in the Canada West this season. He has 12 points over the span.
Collin Shirley tacked on helpers on both markers, while
Gordie Ballhorn also chipped in an assist.
Saskatchewan continues its dominance over Regina with the victory, as the club has not lost on home ice in over 2,100 days to their provincial rivals, with the last loss coming back on Nov. 21, 2013.
After their slow start to the season, the Huskies have been on a tear as of late, as winners of six straight and nine of their last ten dating back to Oct. 18. Saskatchewan now sits with 20 points and a 9-3-2 record.
While with the loss, Regina falls to 2-11-1 and remains in eighth place in the Canada West.
Huskies goalie
Travis Child made his fourth start of the season and with the 28-save win recorded his second shutout on the year.
Brandon Holtby got his second start in as many nights between the pipes for Regina, as the netminder did all he could to keep his team in the game but unfortunately for the visitors, his 32-save performance wasn't enough for the Cougars to pull out a win.
After a scoreless 40 minutes between the provincial rivals that saw Saskatchewan outshoot the visitors 19-13, play opened up in the third period.
Dmytriw, a first-year forward, took over and provided the icebreaker in the final frame. The Craven, Sask. native broke in on a two-on-two and picked the corner overtop the blocker of Holtby to open the scoring at the 4:46 mark of the third.
Just 3:14 later, Dmytriw scored his sixth goal in as many games to extend the Saskatchewan lead to two after he corralled a rebound in front of the crease and roofed his wrister to make it 2-0 for the home side.
Despite generating quality chances throughout the third period, the Cougars were unable to solve Child on the night with the netminder backstopping Saskatchewan to the shutout victory.
Saskatchewan will look to close the first half of their season in fashion next weekend when they travel west to Calgary to tangle with the Mount Royal Cougars. The Huskies will enter the matchup trailing the Cougars by a single point and will have the opportunity to leapfrog the club who topped the defending Canada West finalists twice on opening weekend.
Meanwhile, Regina will also finish the calendar year in the Stampede City. The Cougars will take on the Calgary Dinos in a pair of contests, as the Dinos enter the weekend tied up with the Huskies for third in the conference.
