CALGARY - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies outlasted the Mount Royal Cougars in a shootout, 2-1 Friday night.
The win moves Saskatchewan to 10-3-2 where they are currently tied for second in the conference with the Cougars who hold an identical record.
The final shot count was 36-29 in favour of the Huskies. Saskatchewan's goalie
Taran Kozun stopped 28 shots on net while Cougars' Wyatt Hoflin blocked 34.
The first period was an immediate struggle for control. After seven minutes of play, the Cougars found an advantage for Connor Chartier to score his eighth goal of the season. Tyson Helgesen and Sean Richards lined up the play, quickly passing to Chartier. He wrapped around the net and shot it past Huskies' Kozun.
Saskatchewan tied the game in the third period as forward
Logan McVeigh shot past Hoflin to score his third of the season.
Collin Shirley and
Sam Ruopp set him up for the goal.
After overtime failed to solve anything the game was decided in a shootout. For the Cougars, Connor Rankin and Andrew Fyten each scored a goal. The Huskies'
Collin Shirley and
Jared Dmytriw also found the net before
Levi Cable swept past Hoflin to score the final goal of the night.
The two teams will play once more for this year on Saturday, November 30, at Flames Community Arena.
