SASKATOON – The Saskatchewan Huskies exploded for six goals Saturday night, sending them over the Manitoba Bisons by a score of 6-3 inside Merlish Belsher Place.
Saskatchewan showed off their depth of scoring in the game with six different players –
Gordie Ballhorn,
Collin Shirley,
Jared Dmytriw,
Donovan Neuls,
Kohl Bauml and
Andrew Johnson all scoring. For Dmytriw it was the rookie's best game as a Huskie as he added three assists for the four point night.
Adam Henry, Nathan Halvorsen and Brady Pouteau responded for Manitoba with Lucas Skrumeda adding a pair of assists.
Much like the night before special teams were key in the contest. Saskatchewan scored two shorthanded and one power-play goal on the night with the Bisons tallying a pair of goals on the man-advantage themselves.
The first goal of the game came with the Huskies on the penalty-kill.
Riley Lamb in the Bisons net had trouble with a puck behind his cage, Neuls made no mistake in picking the goalies pocket and finding the wide-open net for his second shorthanded goal is as many games.
Manitoba responded just minutes later on the power-play.
Pouteau walked in from the point and unleashed a laser of a shot that beat
Taran Kozun for the first goal of his Canada West career.
The Huskies retook the lead at the midway mark of the first period.
On a two-man advantage some nice puck movement was capped off by Neuls sliding the puck over to a wide-open Bauml who buried for his second goal of the weekend.
The scoring wasn't done in the first period however as Manitoba fought back to tie the game once again. A strong forecheck from Skrumeda forced a turnover that Halvorsen took advantage of to make the score 2-2.
The Huskies took the lead back for good just minutes into the second frame.
A short from Ballhorn bounced off a man in front of Lamb and the ricochet went high into the air before bouncing off the Bisons goalie and into the back of the net.
Saskatchewan scored their third shorthanded marker of the weekend just minutes later as Dmytriw and Neuls broke in on a two-on-one. Dmytriw kept the puck and fired it past a helpless Lamb for one of six points he recorded on the weekend.
Manitoba made things interesting on yet another special teams goal. On a two-man advantage Adam Henry was left all alone at the point and the defenceman walked in and ripped a shot for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The Bisons kept pressing in the third and while Henry would hit the post just 10 seconds into the final frame, Saskatchewan was able to weather to storm with goals from Shirley and Johnson sealing the deal.
Both of these teams will be back in action next weekend. Manitoba will return home for a weekend set with the league-leading Alberta Golden Bears while the Huskies will play a home-and-home series with the Regina Cougars.
