The No. 5-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the University of Regina men's hockey team 3-1 in front of a boisterous crowd at The Co-operators Centre on Friday evening.
Taran Kozun made 15 saves to help the Huskies improve to 8–3-2 on the season, while Brandon Holtby made 24 saves for the Cougars who fall to 2-10-1.
Kohl Bauml,
Collin Shirley and
Jared Dmytriw scored for the Huskies, while Tristan Frei replied for Regina.
Bauml opened up the scoring early in the first period.
Levi Cable brought the puck into the Cougars zone and fired it over to Bauml for a quick tap-in.
Two minutes later, Shirley extended the Huskies lead to 2-0. Shirley received a long pass from Dmytriw leading to a breakaway, where he came in with speed, put the puck on his backhand and tucked the puck five-hole for his fourth goal of the year. Dmytriw scored the Huskies third goal shorthanded in the second period.
Frei notched the Cougars' lone goal of the night midway through the third period on the powerplay. Landon Peel took a slapshot from the point, and Frei was waiting out front and deflected it into the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season.
The Cougars and Huskies will travel up to Saskatoon for Saturday's rematch at Merlis Belsher Place.
