Trio of Huskies named CW All-Stars

EDMONTON – The 2019 Canada West men's and women's soccer all-star and all-rookie teams were unveiled Thursday, as the conference gets set for playoff action this weekend.

Among those selected were three members of the Saskatchewan Huskies. Nikolas Baikas and Jacob Powell were both named First Team All-Stars while Kuhle Bekwayo was chosen for the All-Rookie Team.

Finishing the regular season with a record of 7-3-4, these three players helped the Huskies to a second place finish in the Prairie Division and the right to host a conference quarter-final against the UVic Vikes this Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Baikas and Powell become the first Huskie teammates to achieve First Team All-Star status since Jordan Farahani and current member of the Vancouver Whitecaps Brett Levis, did so in the 2014-15 season.

Leading the team with three goals and five points, Baikas was a creative force in attack for the Huskies. Baikas was a Canada West Second Team All-Star last season as well as on both the conference and U SPORTS All-Rookie teams.

A rock in the centre of midfield, Powell scored two goals and added a pair of assists in his 13 games of action. Alongside his work offensively, Powell's play defensively helped the Huskies concede just twice in their final six games of the season. Powell was previously a CW First Team All-Star in 2017-18.

Starting 12 games in his rookie season, Kuhle Bekwayo proved to be a crucial component for the Huskies right from the start of his university career. The product of Saskatoon scored three goals on the season.
