Huskies End Season on Home Turf with Hard-Fought Draw Against Griffins

SASKATOON, Sask. Ryan Ko scored the lone Huskie goal Sunday afternoon (Oct. 19) at Griffiths Stadium, as the University of Saskatchewan Huskie Men's Soccer team closed out the 2025 Canada West season with a 1-1 draw against the MacEwan Griffins.

The result sees the Huskies finish the season with a 3-7-4 record and in fifth-place in the conference's Prairie Division while the Griffins end the campaign in sixth with a 2-7-5 record.

The Huskies got off to a strong start in Sunday's contest, as the team looked to finish the season with a win on home turf. As the Dogs pushed the pace, Dante Molina was taken down just outside the box, giving the home team an early scoring opportunity. Ethan Cabral would take the free kick and looked to score but MacEwan keeper Oleksandr Popravka came up with the stop.

Just minutes later Saskatchewan was back on the attack when another Griffin foul set the Huskies up within striking distance. This time, Molina would take the free kick and find Ryan Ko who sent a header down and into the right corner of the net for his first career goal as a Huskie.

Looking to add to their lead, the Huskies continued to dominate play, holding the visiting Griffins to without a shot on goal through the first half.

Despite strong chances from Jackson Kovitch and Alessandro Colado in the 26th and 29th minutes, the game would head to the break with just one goal separating the two teams.

Coming out for the first half, the Griffins showed a much stronger push as they looked for an earlier equalizer. In the 46th minute they were rewarded for their efforts with a free kick just past midfield. After the initial kick was blocked and cleared, the ball came out to Luther Feulefack who sent a shot back towards the net which deflected off a Huskie and past Saskatchewan keeper Jaron Slopinski.
As the Dogs looked to reestablish their lead, Ryan Ko received a great look from in the penalty area but was stopped by Popravka.

After another Saskatchewan chance from Ty Lee, the Griffins began to take hold of the game's momentum. In the 60th and 62nd minutes, MacEwan recorded two quality scoring chances but could not beat Slopinski on the first and the cross bar on the second.

As both teams increased the intensity in the final minutes, neither surrendered much at the defensive ends of the pitch and the match would come to an end 1-1.

Despite missing the playoffs, the 2025 season saw much improvement from the Huskies who improved their overall record from a year ago. With a roster featuring 18 first- and second-year athletes and a strong core of veterans there is plenty to be optimistic about for the program looking ahead to next season.
