REGINA - For the second consecutive day, the Saskatchewan Huskies scored the lone goal of the game midway through the second half as they took a 1-0 victory over the Regina Cougars on Saturday afternoon at the U of R Field.
Saskatchewan's breakthrough came in the 73rd minute.
Jenelle Zapski intercepted a clearing attempt and attempt a shot from 20 yards out which was blocked, but
Maya Gabruch tracked down the rebound and knocked home her seventh goal of the season.
Jadyn Steinhauer made four saves to secure the win for the Huskies, with her best coming in the 25th minute when Regina forward Kirsten Finley got the ball in the left side of the box but couldn't chip it over the Saskatchewan keeper.
The Cougars also had a set pieces attempt in the 58th from a dangerous position and a promising-looking rush in the 64th, but couldn't convert on either opportunity.
Besides the goal, the best chance of the day for Saskatchewan might have come just minutes into the game when the Huskies thought they'd generated an early goal but the play was ruled offside. Saskatchewan also had a quality chance in the 52nd when Gabruch rang a shot off the cross bar from the left side of the box.
The win improves Saskatchewan's record to 7-2-3 as the Huskies continue to lead the Prairie Division with a total of 24 points. They'll now prepare for a huge home weekend next Saturday and Sunday, as they'll host both the second-place (MacEwan) and third-place (Alberta) teams in the division to close out the conference schedule.
Regina (3-6-3) will also host Alberta on Saturday and MacEwan on Sunday to finish off Canada West play. Both of those games will kick off at noon.
