SASKATOON – A historic rivalry will be renewed this weekend when two of the best programs in the nation take to the ice at Merlis Belsher Place on Friday Nov. 30 and Saturday, Dec. 1.

The games will feature the No. 3 Saskatchewan Huskies and the No. 2 Alberta Golden Bears, who between them have won a grand total of 37 Canada West championships.

Both teams will come into the weekend with momentum on their side, Saskatchewan has won their past 12 games in a row and lead Canada West with a 13-1 record while Alberta has claimed victory in their past eight games and sit second in the conference at 11-3.

5 Things

1: The Huskies current 12-game winning streak is their longest since the 1999-2000 season.

2: Michael Sofillas was named the CW-WHL second star of the week for his four points against the Bisons.

3: Saskatchewan is a perfect 7-0 at home in the 2018-19 regular season.

4: Alberta defeated Saskatchewan in both the Canada West championship and U SPORTS Nation semifinals last season.

5: In partnership with CJWW, the Huskies will be taking donations of unwrapped toys to be given to less fortunate families at both games.

Scouting the Golden Bears

After an uncharacteristically slow start to the season, the Golden Bears have caught fire and enter the weekend on an eight-game winning streak. These will be the final regular season games that the rivals will play against each other this season after they split a pair of games in Alberta to begin the season.

Saskatchewan won on the first night by a score of 5-2 but the Golden Bears rebounded to take the second game 5-1.

Luke Philp and Jason Fram lead Alberta, and the conference, with 17 points in 14 games. Not far behind them are Cole Sanford and Riley Kieser who have scored 16 points each.

Goaltender Zach Sawchenko has started ten of the Golden Bears' games this year, and currently sports an 8-2-0 record with a 1.70 goals against average and a 0.916 save percentage.
