SASKATOON - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's basketball team will continue their four game home stand as they close out the calendar year at home against the UNBC Timberwolves. The matchup will provide a meeting of two of the Canada West's finest, in what has the potential to be a possible playoff clash.

The Huskies are looking to continue their winning ways as they begin to prepare for the stretch run in the second half of the season. After the team's second place finish in both the Canada West and at the U SPORTS national championships, Saskatchewan is aiming to rewrite the script this season.

UNBC opened their Canada West Campaign with six consecutive victories, but dropped both contests in Abbotsford to the Fraser Valley Cascades last weekend and now sit with a 6-2 record. The Timberwolves finished last season with a 9-11 record but dropped their lone playoff game to Winnipeg, which eliminated them from championship contention. However, UNBC entered this season with high hopes and were slotted in as the fifth ranked team in the Canada West coach's poll.

The Huskies last tangled with the Timberwolves on Feb. 10 and 11 during the 2016-17 season, in Prince George. Saskatchewan was victorious in both contests as they opened the series with a 72-65 win over UNBC, and followed that up with a 87-53 victory in the second game of the back to back to sweep the series.

Five Things

1: The Huskies are first in the Canada West with an 8-2 record and have reeled off four consecutive victories and are winners of seven of their last eight.

2: This will be the final weekend of the first half of the regular season in the Canada West conference.

3: The Huskies have won all four games against the Timberwolves in program history during conference play.

4: UNBC struggled away from Prince George last season, as the team finished with a 3-7 record in road games.

5: Maria Mongomo and Vasiliki Louka have been the key to the Timberwolves success this season and each are in the top three of the Canada West in points per game this season.

Scouting the Timberwolves

Sergey Shchepotkin is in his sixth season at the helm of the Timberwolves and is attempting to lead his club to their third consecutive postseason appearance.

After averaging 18.2 points per game in the 2017-18 season, Vasiliki Louka has failed to skip a beat as she is third in the conference in scoring. The 6'4" fifth-year forward from Athens, Greece has been a dominant presence in the post this season, as she is averaging 20.1 points per game through eight contests this season.

Maria Mongomo is leading the Canada West with 22.3 points per game. The fourth-year guard from Las Palmas, Spain has also been a force to be reckoned with on the defensive end as she is seventh in the Canada West with 20 steals this season.
