SASKATOON – A trip to their first Vanier Cup since hosting the national championship in 2006 is on the line when the University of Saskatchewan Huskies travel to Ontario for a Mitchell Bowl clash with the Western Mustangs.
The Huskies will be looking to keep a streak of upsets going when they face a Western team that has won 22 games in a row, including last year's Vanier Cup.
Saskatchewan earned the title of Hardy Cup champion after entering the postseason as the third seed in the Canada West playoffs. A 31-28 overtime victory over UBC in Vancouver and a 43-18 rout of the Dinos in Calgary have proven that the team picked last in the Canada West pre-season coaches poll doesn't mind going on the road as the underdog.
The game in London, Ont. will get underway at 3:00 p.m.
5 Things
1: The Huskies Hardy Cup victory means the team will play in a national semifinal for the first time since 2006.
2: Western are the reigning Vanier Cup champions and head coach Greg Marshall holds a 105-27 record since taking over the team in 2007.
3: The winner of the game will face either Laval or StFX in the Vanier Cup, scheduled for Nov. 24 in Quebec City.
4: Saskatchewan is 9-2 since 1989 in semifinal games.
5: The Huskies defence came up big in the Hardy Cup, forcing the previously undefeated Dinos into turning the ball over seven times.
By the Numbers
222 –
Tyler Chow rushed for the third-most yards in single-game Huskies history in the Hardy Cup win.
9 –
Kyle Siemens is in the top-10 in all 9 major Huskies passing records.
370 – Western has outscored their opponents by over 350 points this season.
10 – The Mustangs led the OUA in ten major team statistical categories.
Scouting the Mustangs
The Mustangs led the OUA with 14 total all-stars after their regular season, seven first team and seven second teamers.
Western plays a style of football the Huskies haven't seen much this year, preferring to keep the ball on the ground, where Cedric Joseph racked up 965 yards in eight games. The Mustangs also led the OUA with 24 rushing touchdowns during the regular season.
QB Chris Merchant was named the Vanier Cup MVP last season after throwing for 276 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 96 yards and two touchdowns.
Much like the Huskies, the Mustangs force a lot of turnovers, recovering seven fumbles and making 12 interceptions in the regular season.
