Ben Whiting Named Huskie Football Special Teams Coordinator

SASKATOON, Sask. – Huskie Football Head Coach Scott Flory is pleased to announce that current assistant coach and former Huskie linebacker, Ben Whiting has been named Special Teams Coordinator.

"We are ecstatic to have Ben step into this role and come on board in a full-time capacity," said Flory. "He exceeds expectations in all three phases of this position, and we know he's going to do a great job for us, our student-athletes, and the program. We couldn't be more excited to add another full-time coach to our staff."

A member of the Huskie coaching staff for the past three seasons (2023-25), Whiting now takes over on special teams after serving as a defensive assistant (defensive line in 2023 & 2024, linebackers in 2025).

"[I'm] just obviously excited," said Whiting. "Knowing what the program has done for me and the opportunities that it's opened, being able to carry the torch and be a small help to these athletes in whatever way will be fulfilling. I'm just really excited to a part of the program on a full-time basis and excited to get going."

"I think [the 2026 team is] obviously a really talented group and we want to be putting our best foot forward and learn from [last season's] opportunities. Scott [Flory] and Mason [Nyhus] do a great job of getting the right guys in the room and I just need to be able to put them in the best situations possible."

Over the past three seasons, Whiting has helped produce some of the best defensive units in the nation. In his first year on the sidelines, he helped lead a defensive line which finished first in Canada West in sacks (22) and contributed to a defence which allowed a conference-best 18.6 points per game.

The following season he helped guide the defensive line through an injury-riddled campaign before producing two of the top linebackers in the nation in 2025 in Seth Hundeby and Jacob Goldstone. In each of the last two season he has also helped the team to a Hardy Cup appearance in addition to a trip to the Vanier Cup this past season.

A local Saskatoon product, his units have produced three conference All-Stars, two All-Canadians, four CFL Draft picks, and the 2025 Presidents' Trophy Recipient as the top defensive player in the nation (Seth Hundeby, LB).

Whiting will continue to coach the Huskie linebackers while serving as Special Teams Coordinator.

As a student-athlete, Whiting was a member of the Huskies from 2015-19 and produced one of the most productive careers from a linebacker in program history. A member of the 2018 Hardy Cup Champions, he ranks seventh all-time in career tackles by a Huskie with 154 in addition to producing 11.5 tackles for a loss, ten pass break-ups, two sacks, and two forced fumbles.

Appearing in seven postseason games in green and white, he added 33 tackles, two tackles for a loss, two pass break-ups, a sack, a forced fumble, and an interception.

In addition to graduating with an undergraduate degree in education, Whiting holds a master's degree in education administration from the University of Saskatchewan.

Prior to his senior season, Whiting was drafted 57th overall by the Montreal Alouettes in the 2019 CFL Draft. He would go on to spend time with Montreal, Calgary, and Hamilton before officially retiring in 2022.

In addition to his role on the sidelines, Whiting will also assist the Huskie Football program in areas related to student-athlete academics and community development.

"The reason I [coach] is because it's fun. I love all the guys on staff, I love the team, and ultimately have a great amount of care for the program. I'm just excited to continue having fun, but now on a full-time basis."
