SASKATOON – The No. 8 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies football team will travel into Vancouver to take on the UBC Thunderbirds in the only matchup of the regular season between the two programs.
Â
Both teams will be coming off their bye week and will be fresh and ready to battle in a pivotal Canada West clash. Saskatchewan will look to get back in the win column, after a defeat at the hands of the Calgary Dinos in week five.
Â
Despite losing a heartbreaking 26-21 contest at the hands of the Alberta Golden Bears before the bye, The Thunderbirds received new life, as the team now sits at 2-3 on the season after a
Regina Rams forfeit resulted in an extra victory for UBC.
Â
5 Things
1) The Huskies offense has been prolific inside the red zone this season, as they have scored touchdowns on 13-20 appearances this season, while putting up points on 19-20, both of which place them atop of the Canada West in the respective categories. Â
2)Â
Kyle Siemens now sits at 7,233 career passing yards after he passed his father Doug for fourth-most in Huskies program history last week in Calgary. The Huskies quarterback will now set his sights on Laurence Nixon who he trails by 112 yards. Â
3) The Huskies ground-game has powered their offense so far this season, as they have received excellent production from both
Tyler Chow and
Adam Machart. The team sits in first-place in the Canada West in yards per rush as well as rushing first downs. Â
4) The Huskies ball-hawking secondary has been spectacular, with
Josh Hagerty and
Nelson Lokombo leading the Canada West in interceptions through five games as they each sit at three interceptions. Â
5) Dating back to 2012, the Huskies have won 8 of 11 matchups against the Thunderbirds. Â
Â
By the Numbers:
Â
4 -
Tristian Koronkiewicz is tied for first in the Canada West with four sacks.
Â
6 – Despite missing last week's contest against Calgary,
Colton Klassen remains the Canada West leader in receiving touchdowns with six.
Â
28 –
Ben Whiting sits in third in the Canada West with 28 total tackles through five games this season.
Â
50 –
Kyle Siemens sits at 50 career passing touchdowns, and trails Brent Schneider's all-time program record of 56 with three regular season games to play.
Â
Scouting the Thunderbirds:
Â
The Thunderbirds have been a strong team at home this season, as they stand with a 1-1 record while on home turf after a week one victory over Manitoba and played a strong game despite a narrow 32-28 defeat at the hands of the Calgary Dinos in week four. UBC will play two of their final three games at Thunderbird Stadium, as the team enters the stretch run towards the postseason.
Â
Trivel Pinto has been electrifying when in the lineup for the Thunderbirds as the fourth-year receiver sits in second in the Canada West with 112.8 receiving yards per game.
Â
UBC Thunderbirds starting quarterback Michael O'Connor is averaging 302 passing yards, however, he has struggled to find the end zone as he sits with six passing touchdowns through five games.
Â
